Psychiatry for counselors
Psychiatry is the medical specialization devoted to mental illness, emotional disorders, and behavioural problems. A trained psychiatrist is a physician with a medical degree who can prescribe medicine and a range of other therapies. By studying the basics of psychiatry, counselors will learn when to refer a client to a psychiatrist and how counseling can interface with other therapies.
Behavioural psychology
Behaviourism, also known as Behavioural Psychology, is a theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviours are acquired through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. According to this school of thought, behaviour can be studied in a systematic and observable manner regardless of internal mental states. Behaviorists believe that our responses to environmental stimuli shape all our actions. Behaviour analysis is often used as a therapeutic technique to help children with autism and developmental delays to acquire new skills.

Neuro-linguistic programming is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour. NLP provides people with a methodology to model outstanding performances achieved by geniuses and leaders in their field. Practitioners have applied NLP commercially to achieve work-orientated goals, such as improved productivity or job progression. More widely, it has been applied as a therapy for psychological disorders, including phobias, depression, generalized anxiety disorders or GAD, and post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.
Gestalt therapy
Gestalt, a German word for “form” or “shape”, refers to the idea that natural systems and their properties should be viewed as wholes, not as collections of parts. Gestalt therapy emphasizes personal responsibility, and focuses upon the individual's experience in the present moment, which includes the therapist–client relationship, the environmental and social contexts of a person's life, and the self-regulating adjustments people make as a result of their overall situation.
Gestalt Therapy developed by Fritz Perls, Laura Perls and Paul Goodman in the 1940s and 50s has been effective in treating clients with personality disorders. Gestalt Therapy is also effective in counseling groups, couples, and families
